In
1972, Oscar Nieto created Mozaico de Danzas in Los Angeles,
California. USA. This ensemble performed a "mosaic"
of Spanish Dances including classical, neo-classical, regional
and flamenco. The group created a splash with its innovative
choreographies, colourful costumes and use of new sounds using
non-traditional musical instruments. In particular, Oscar's
choreography to salsa composer Willie Colon's "Che Che
Cole" created an uproar and drew a passionate response
from the public, as people either loved or hated the nouveau
look at Spanish Dance.
In
1983, Oscar Nieto continued the Mozaico tradition in Vancouver,
British Columbia, Canada as teacher and performer of Mozaico
Flamenco. Far ahead of its time, his flamenco fusion band,
Flamenco Heresy, incorporated flamenco with "heretical"
instruments such as electric guitar, base, congas and the
cora (an African musical instrument) which are now used in
flamenco music today.
Mozaico
Flamenco has been a moving force in the world of Spanish dance
for over 30 years, continuously pushing the outer edges of
the artistic envelope, fusing dance, music and culture. The
establishment of Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Academy will ensure
that the tradition of innovation will be passed to future
generations of flamenco students for years to come.
