Children aged 5 to 12 will be grouped together from 10:30am-11:15am.  Older, more advanced children or teens will be grouped from 11:15am-12:00pm.  An assessment will be made by the instructor for placement.

Saturday 10:30am - 11:15am CHILDREN

This fun, educational class is for chidren aged 5 to 12.  The class is 45 minutes.   The children will explore different flamenco song forms, learn to count different time signatures, play rhythm games, do palmas (hand-clapping) and learn basic flamenco dance techniques. Basic flamenco dance techniques include braceo (arm movements), floreo (finger movements) and zapateado (footwork). The children will also learn short choreographies to enhance their overall coordination.  Any children less than 5 years of age must be assessed and accepted by the instructor.

Saturday 11:15am - 12:00pm TEEN

This fun, educational class is for tweens or teenagers that have been studying flamenco for several years or have some dance background.  The class is 45 minutes.  The students focus on proper flamenco dance technique, turns, footwork and choreography.

Teaching Style

Cyrena's teaching style has evolved from her experience teaching Suzuki cello. In the Suzuki Method, children as young as the age of four learn to play the cello through games, imaginative play, repetition, ear training and continued parental involvement. This concept carries beautifully into teaching dance.

In flamenco class, students learn to move with joy and confidence through dance-oriented games and repetition. Flamenco classes foster independence, coordination, cooperation, concentration, respect for other students and respect for the art of flamenco. The studio also provides a cooperative, non-competitive environment where children can discover the joy of dancing. Kids have so much fun they often forget how much they are learning!

The kids' curriculum comprises of all the basic elements of flamenco: braceo (arms), torso movement, zapateado (footwork), floreo (finger movements), jaleo (shouts of encouragement), palmas (handclapping) and understanding simple and more complex rhythmic patterns. Through dance, children learn to connect with their bodies, gain a sense of rhythm and feel confidence in movement and self-expression. Students are encouraged to perform in costume at quarterly in-studio performances and at the annual student recital, which adds extra excitement to the class.

Cyrena has been teaching young children for twenty years, and is a positive, articulate and engaging instructor who is passionate about flamenco. She welcomes children of all ages, shapes and sizes to join in!
