NEWS RELEASE – May 2007

PLACING NEW ORDER FOR BATA DE COLAS AGAIN!

I am preparing a new order of BATA DE COLA skirts from Rita Benz, flamenco seamstress from Ontario who has studied with bata de cola makers in Seville. For those of you who are unfamiliar, Bata de Cola is the long train skirt that trails behind the dancer. The dance lifts and kicks the skirt around so it swooshes around like a tail. "COLA" means "TAIL" in Spanish, hence the name.

I spent several months in Seville in 2006 to study the Bata de Cola with Matilde Coral, a grand master in this art form and guardian of the Sevillan style of dance. Renowned for teaching the Bata de Cola, Matilde’s classes are conducted based on building technique with turning exercises and series of “marcaje” or “marking” which form the foundation of all Bata de Cola movement. Using this class format, I started teaching Bata de Cola last September and our inaugural class has been studying Alegrias the whole year. First we choreographed a modern Alegria to Arcangel’s CD. Now we are completing the entire Alegria following the traditional structure: Letra – Silencio – Castellana – Escobilla – Bulerias. Many people that have seen me perform or our class perform, find the Bata de Cola awe inspiring and wonderfully graceful, and reminiscent of a different time and era.

GOOD NEWS! Starting Sept 2007, we will be starting Siguriya also known as Seguirillas, which is the jondo father of all flamenco song. The class will be on Wednesday 7:30-9:00pm. So if you’re interested, it’s time to invest in a bata. Here are the details.

Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Academy is placing a group order from Rita Benz. She has quoted PROFESSIONAL bata skirts for $260 to $450+. The price differential is because each dancer is a different size/weight/height and has various requirements. Each bata is custom made. Compared to those batas made in Spain, this is EXTREMELY economical and you can purchase a bata skirt without a huge investment within Canada. Batas will be delivered in approximately one month.

(Last year we offered 2 models: Medium and Professional Level batas. This year I am only recommending Professional level batas because they are significantly better than the medium. The people that bought medium were unhappy with them, so it is best to go with only the professional model.)

DESCRIPTION OF RECOMMENDED SKIRT

PROFESSIONAL LEVEL

BLACK

NARROW / SLIM STYLE

7-8 TOP RUFFLES

RUFFLES must have bias trim

UNDER RUFFLES should be even with the top ruffle (flush)

UNDERSIDE OF COLA should be the same colour as your trim / under ruffles

COST: $260-$450+ plus shipping, depending on size, trim, fabric, etc. Once the measurement sheet has been processed, a proper quotation will be given.

The reason I am recommending black is it is versatile with different coloured trim (red, green, blue, yellow, orange, purple, white, etc). There are colour swatches at the studio. I feel this style is the most flexible, as we can all match in black and wear matching picos/flowers for group performances. However, if you are a soloist, and want another colour skirt, Rita can also supply them but this pricing will not be applicable because you cannot take advantage of the economies of scale offered with the group purchase.

To order a bata de cola, we require a $150 deposit cheque made to Rita Benz and the filled two page measurement specification sheets.
