On October 31, 2008, our artistic director Oscar Nieto went to have a cancer tumor removed from his colon. What should have been a 3 hour, minimally invasive operation ended up being a 7 hour, open operation in which he had colon and intestine removed. The surgeon had to make an incision, so Oscar has a 6-7 inch incision from rib to hip.
Oscar spends his days recovering and is currently resting at home. He is in good spirits, positive and hopeful. He is already up and about and mobile. He is happy for all the love around him and all the good wishes. He thanks all those who have contributed to the Oscar Nieto Medical Fund and who have donated time in helping him with errands, shopping and housekeeping.
At this time, we are uncertain as to when Oscar will be returning to dance or teach classes. It is important at this time for him to focus his efforts on healing. His external wounds from the incision are still to heal. The next step is chemotherapy. When we know more, we will update this site.
Through our school, Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Academy, our students have been donating to a fund earmarked for Medical Supplies. Oscar is in need of supplies such as bandages, colostomy bags, medication, etc. So we are letting people know that instead of flowers or presents, that there is a more serious need for medical supplies. If you wish to make a contribution, please feel free to come by the school and drop off to me or any of the instructors, Andrea Williams or Cyrena Huang. The funds will be pooled together as our community is buying medical supplies and groceries for Oscar on a regular basis. Some of our students work in the medical industry and can purchase items more readily than you or I.
We are happy to report that we raised $1,500 in ticket sales of our year end Fiesta Flamenca on December 14th, and another $750 in donations that night! Altogether we have raised over $3,000, but in the long run, more is needed.
Please include Oscar in your prayers, as we are believers in what group prayer, mediation and positive thinking can do. Feel free to write in with advice!
