Edie Orenstein Children's Dance Scholarship Award

Oscar Nieto Dance Scholarship Award

Outstanding Service Awards

In our year end concert, "Feria de Invierno",

Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Academy honored a number of

students with 2009 annual scholarships and awards at the

Norman Rothstein Theatre.

We feel strongly that it is important to recognize excellence and encourage people to be the best they can be!

Congratulations to the recipients of the Annual Edie Orenstein Children's Dance Scholarship Award 2009!

Neena Savage, Children I Class

Mercy Walker, Children II Class

Each year the children are graded on four criterion:

talent, improvement, execution of the choreography, dedication and good attitude.  These two special children achieved the highest scores and to encourage them on their flamenco journey, we award them with $100 scholarships towards their dance studies in 2010.

Edie Orenstein, philanthropist, is a self-described learning addict,

is insatiably curious and has been fascinated with Flamenco for as far back as she can remember.  She is the annual sponsor of the Children's Dance Scholarship Award and Children's Program.  She has provided the cajons (drum boxes) and castanets to further advance studies at Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Academy.  Thank you Edie!

Congratulations to the second recipient of the Oscar Nieto Dance Scholarship Award 2009!

Shyiang Strong

I'd like to make special mention that Shyiang has been a student of mine for over a decade and was in the very first class I ever taught in 1999.  She has been a member of our professional dance company Mozaico Flamenco Dance Theatre since 2003.

Oscar Nieto founded Mozaico Flamenco in the 1970s and

was honored at the Fiesta Flamenca 2008 with the inauguration of the Annual Oscar Nieto Dance Scholarship Award.

This award considers one's ability, talent and potential,

and dedication to studying flamenco.  In particular, being able to dance solos and improvise Por Fiestas is important criterion as our school is renowned for the study of Bulerias and Tangos Por Fiesta.  The dancer must also possess what we call a "Mozaico" attitude and be an excellent ambassador for the school.

Once in a while there are outstanding members of our Flamenco Community that go above and beyond the call of duty, without being asked, because of their love of flamenco and our school.  While there are more than four individuals I can think of, I would like to honor these individuals with the The Outstanding Service Award of 2009.

  • Julie Cochrane - Children's Class teaching assistant & palmas
  • Cyrena Huang - Children's costumes, cante & cello
  • Michelle Harding - Oscar Nieto's teaching assistant for 2009
  • Pirouz de Caspio - guitar por fiesta & composition

Good work everyone and thank you for your on-going dedication!
